Bio

Dr. Christina Ohland, PhD

Ha, that's so formal, people usually only call me doctor jokingly! Yes, I have a doctoral degree. But more importantly, I have 8 years research experience in active labs, have multiple peer-reviewed papers published and have presented my work at Canadian and international conferences. For reference, here's my CV.

My unique perspective, however, is that I am the only member of my extended family who has pursued science. In fact, I'm one of only a few with a Bachelor's degree and the only one with a graduate degree. Explaining what I do and discussing media coverage of science topics with my family has given me insight into how the general public views research. I'm endlessly fascinated by the different perspective that an intelligent, non-scientist brings to these situations. Sometimes it's a view that I haven't considered because I've been trained to look at problems in a certain way, but unfortunately sometimes it's a misunderstanding due to lack of knowledge. My goal is to combat these misunderstandings and hopefully we can bridge the gap between the scienceys and the nons.
